We are so happy that our own Dr. Helene Tigro was awarded the 2026 Undergraduate Research Mentor Award during the 2026 Undergraduate Research Symposium. Thank you @martinamadrzak Madrzak and Isa for nominating Dr. Tigro. Many thanks to the @fsu_cre at @floridastateuniversity for organizing this amazing event that gives our undergraduate students the opportunity to showcase their research projects and develop public speaking skills applicable to their future careers.

"The Exhaustive Chase: Investigation of Striated Muscle Regulation in Health and Disease" brought so many outstanding muscle research scientists to Florida State University to celebrate the outstanding research career of Dr. Chase! https://www.biophysics.org/upcoming-networking-events/the-exhaustive-chase-investigation-of-striated-muscle-regulation-in-health-and-disease

Very happy to announce our latest paper led by Dr. Helene Tigro. Here, we employed AI modeling and molecular dynamics simulations to show that phosphorylated α‑actinin‑2 is more susceptible to spend time in a state that is more compatible with F-actin binding. This could explain how cells adjust to mechanical stress seen with every heartbeat and bout of exercise. Big thanks to Dr. Matthew Childers and Mike Regnier for supporting us in this project.

🫀Happy to announce the publication of this work in ACS Omega! Here we sought to explore the mechanistic basis of how the heart muscle protein troponin relaxes faster in response to adrenergic-signaling phosphorylation as it takes place in exercise and the fight-or-flight response. We compared this response with that of a polyphenol/antioxidant found in green tea that acts directly on troponin to cause loos of sensitivity to calcium in a similar manner as phosphorylation. Super productive time at the @American_Heart @AHAMeetings in New Orleans!

Some highlights from the week:
🫀 Meeting the inspiring founder of @lisahcma and learning more about the HCMA mission
📈 Presenting my poster on the mechanism of troponin desensitization
🔬 Reconnecting with colleagues and meeting new collaborators in the field of cardiac research

Grateful for the opportunity to share, learn, and be part of such an incredible community advancing cardiovascular science! #cardiovasculardisease

We had my postdoc advisor Dr. Brenda Russell as a guest speaker for our multi-PI lab meeting! We learned lots from her career in research including stories of what was like to be a PhD graduate from Nobel Laureate AF Huxley, demonstrating that T-tubules are connected to the cell membrane, and being the first to culture cardiomyocytes in 3D substrates made from silicon wafers!
