The K99/R00 Pathway to Independence Award is an NIH grant that started in in 2006 to accelerate the transition of trainees into independent research positions. This was created in response to the increasing net aging of the US independent investigator workforce. Given the vast numbers of awards being granted since 2006, we studied the career outcomes of these early stage investigators to answer multiple questions like what institutions get most of the awards? Where trainees go after securing an award? How long it takes this cohort to secure a substantial NIH independent research award such as an R01? The interactive Sankey network application allows users to interact with the data presented in our study.
